If your doorway is not a standard size, you have probably already found out how annoying that is.
Merchants sell doors in a handful of set sizes. Anything else and you are either trimming a door until it looks wrong, or you are being told it cannot be done. We make internal doors from scratch to whatever size your opening actually is. Wider, narrower, taller, shorter. Out of square at the top because the house has moved. All fine.
Every door is made in our own workshop in Mansfield. We do not order in blanks and stick a label on them.
Matching an existing door
This is the job we get asked for most, and it is the one we enjoy.
You have four original doors and one that has been replaced with something modern that looks nothing like the rest. Or you have knocked through and now need a fifth door to match four that are a hundred years old.
Bring us one of the originals, or send us photos and measurements. We will match the panel layout, the panel proportions, the bead, the moulding profile and the thickness. We cut our own profiles, so "we cannot get that moulding any more" is not a reason to stop.
We have replicated doors for period property including work in conservation areas, matching an original closely enough that it reads as part of the house rather than a replacement.
Styles we make
Four-panel and six-panel Victorian doors. Ledged and braced doors for cottages, outbuildings and boot rooms. Flat panel and shaker for modern houses. Glazed doors with clear, obscure or reeded glass. Doors with fielded panels, doors with raised and bevelled panels, doors with a bolection moulding round them.
If you want something that does not have a name, describe it or draw it. We work from sketches all the time.
Timber
Oak is the usual choice for a door that stays natural. Hard-wearing, open grain, gets richer with age.
Ash is lighter in colour and straight grained. A good option if you want a natural timber door without the heaviness of oak.
Tulipwood and other paint-grade hardwoods are what we normally use for painted doors. They are stable, they take primer and paint properly, and the finish stays crisp on the mouldings.
Softwood still has its place, particularly for painted doors in less demanding spots or where budget matters.
We will tell you which one suits your job and why. If a cheaper timber will do the job perfectly well, we will say so.
Painted or natural
Painted doors get sprayed rather than brushed, so the finish is flat and even and the mouldings stay sharp. Any colour you want.
Natural doors can be oiled, waxed or lacquered. Oil is easy to patch and refresh. Lacquer is harder wearing but harder to repair invisibly. In a busy family hallway we usually steer people towards something that can be touched up rather than something that has to be stripped.
Frames, linings and ironmongery
We make matching linings, architrave and stops so the whole opening works together. If your architrave profile is original and only exists in your house, we will match that too.
We can hang the doors and fit the ironmongery, or supply them ready for your joiner. Tell us which and we will price accordingly.
Fire doors and odd requirements
If you need a door for a loft conversion, a garage-to-house opening or a flat, there are regulations about fire rating. Tell us what the building control officer has asked for at the start. That way we can talk you through what is achievable and what is not before anything is made.
Awkward jobs welcome
Curved head doors. Doors with a rake on them for under a stair. Doors that are 2.4 metres tall. Doors for a boat, because yes, we have built boats. Odd one-offs are a big part of what we do and they are the jobs we would rather have than another run of standard units.

Frequently asked questions
Can you copy a door I already have?
Yes, and we do it often. The best thing you can do is let us see one of the originals. We measure the panel sizes, the stile and rail widths, the thickness and the moulding profile, then cut a matching profile in the workshop. If you cannot get a door to us, clear photographs with a tape measure in shot will usually get us most of the way there.
How long will my doors take?
It depends on how many you need, the timber, the finish and the workshop's current workload. A painted door takes longer than a natural one because of the priming, spraying and drying stages. We will give you a realistic timescale with your quote and keep you updated with photos as it progresses.
What affects the price of a bespoke internal door?
Size, timber, the number of panels, the complexity of the mouldings, whether it is glazed, and the finish. A plain painted flat-panel door is a lot less work than a six-panel oak door with fielded panels and bolection mouldings. Hanging and ironmongery, if you want us to do it, is priced separately.
My house is in a conservation area. Do I need permission for internal doors?
Internal doors in an ordinary conservation area house usually do not need consent, because conservation area rules generally deal with the external appearance of a building. Listed buildings are different, and internal alterations can need listed building consent. If your property is listed, check with the conservation officer at your council first. We are used to working to what they ask for.
Should I have my doors painted or left natural?
Painted gives you total colour freedom and hides the joins between different pieces of timber, so it suits a mixed or paint-grade timber. Natural shows off the grain and is the right call if you have chosen oak or ash for its character. Think about maintenance too. Painted can be touched up easily. Oiled timber needs a coat every few years in high-traffic areas but is very easy to refresh.
Do you fit the doors or just make them?
Either. Plenty of customers have their own builder on site and just want the doors supplied. Others want us to hang them, fit the ironmongery and make good the linings and architrave. Say which you want when you enquire so the quote reflects it.
Do you do external doors as well?
Yes. We make external doors too, including in Accoya, and we are a licensed Accoya manufacturer. Accoya is modified timber that carries Accoya’s own 50-year above-ground warranty, which makes it a strong choice for anything exposed to the weather.
